Norwegian is a V2 language. This means that the verb must come second in health sentences. Be aware that this applies to narrative sentences, i.e. of the type:
Samaneh goes to the industry meeting.
Dare takes the bus.
The live in the same city.
Here you see that the verb is in second place in all the sentences.
It also applies in interrogative sentences WITH question words . The question word comes in position 1, then comes the verb, and then the subject. The subject and the verb thus switch places. This is called INVERSION:
Where live they ?
But what happens when the narrative sentence is changed to become an interrogative sentence WITHOUT a question word ?
Is Samaneh going to the industry meeting? (Yes, Samaneh goes to the industry meeting).
Does Tor take the bus? (Yes, Tor takes the bus).
Do they live in the same city? (Yes, they live in the same city).
The answer is that in interrogative sentences WITHOUT question words , the verb comes first and has thus switched places with the subject . When verb and subject switch places, it is called inversion. Interrogative sentences without question words are AN EXCEPTION to the V2 rule!
