In Norwegian we have three ways of expressing ownership:
👉 genitive with -s
👉 genitive with "to"
👉 garpe genitive
GENITIVE WITH -S
The genitive comes first, the noun is in the indefinite form:
Anna 's book
Martin 's cat
🆘 We don't use apostrophes unless the word ends in s, x or z:
Toma 's car
Ander 's house
🆘 After the genitive, the adjective is in the definite form (+ e), even if the noun is in the indefinite form:
the teacher 's new computer
the student 's difficult questions
Tor 's old apartment
GENITIVE WITH "TO"
When we use the preposition "to" the noun must come first and be in a specific form:
book a to Anna
cat one for Martin
GARPEGENITIVE
This form is widely used orally, especially when the word ends in -s, -z or -x. We use the possessive sin / sit /sine and the indefinite form of the noun:
Anna 's book
Martin 's cat
Tomas ' car
Benedikte 's child
Siri 's students
