" Different " and " different " can be adjectives and describe nouns , or adverbs and describe verbs .
We use " differently " when parts of the subject are different from each other, different:
Tine and Anna are different . (For example: Tine has blonde hair, and Anna has red hair.)
We use " differently " when the subject is different from something else:
Tine and Anna are different . (The other ladies are the same, all have black hair, only Anna and Tine are different from the others).
The two teachers speak very differently . (Anna speaks Eastern, and Tine speaks Bergen).
The two teachers speak very differently . (The other teachers speak Northern Norwegian, only Anna and Tine speak other dialects).
Here you see several examples:
1. Tor and Ed have different cars.
(Tor has a Mercedes, and Ed has a BMW. We are comparing two parts of the subject.)
2. Tor and Ed have different cars.
(All the other friends have Toyotas. Only Tor and Ed have cars that are different from the other cars. We are comparing the subject to something else.)
3. ERROR : Tor has blond hair, but Ed is different .
Since we cannot compare parts of the subject, we must compare it to something else. That's why we have to use "differently" here. "Different" cannot stand alone like this without the prepositional phrase "from Tor".
4. Thor has blond hair, but Ed is different .
(Ed is different from Tor.)
5. Tor and Pavel are alike, but Tor and Ed are different .
We compare two parts of the subject. (Thor and Ed).
6. ERROR : Tor and Pavel are alike, but Tor and Ed are different .
(In the context, it appears that we want to compare parts of the subject, and therefore we must use "different".)
