👉 What is a vowel?
A vowel is a sound made by air from the lungs coming out through the mouth. We use our tongue, teeth and lips to shape the sound. All vowels can be sung, you don't need to close your mouth to make a vowel:
🎵 aaaaaa - eeeeee - iiiiiiiiiiii - oooooo 🎵
The Norwegian vowel system consists of 9 vowels, all of which have one short and one long. There are therefore 18 vowels to deal with when learning Norwegian. This can cause problems for those of you who have fewer vowels in your mother tongue or other languages you know well.
Not all languages have such a complicated vowel system as Norwegian, so challenges will always arise. It is completely normal for everyone who learns Norwegian!
A - /aː/ | Y - /yː/ |
E - /eː/ | Æ - /æː/ |
I - /iː/ | OE OE/ |
O - /uː/ | Oh - /oː/ |
U - /ʉː/ |
