A diphthong is two vowels that are pronounced one after the other in the same syllable. The vowels must be in the same syllable for it to be a diphthong.
For example, "ei" is a diphthong in the word "st ei n" because the word "st ei n" is pronounced in one syllable.
In the word "protein", "ei" is not a diphthong because "e" and "i" are not in the same syllable: pro-te-in.
Here are some more examples of compositions with and without diphthong:
ai:

👉 Angoraull has four syllables: An - go - ra - ull. "A" and "u" are in different syllables. Therefore, there is not a diphthong in this word.
a:
👉 Arb ei d has two syllables: Ar - b ei d. "E" and "i" are in the same syllable, and therefore there is a diphthong in this word.
. Protein has three syllables: Pro - te - in. "E" and "i" are in different syllables. Therefore, there is not a diphthong in this word.
island:
Ø H øy they have two syllables: Høy - de. "Island" is in the same syllable, and "island" and "y" together are always a diphthong.
